PROGRAMS
He really liked learning how to make phone calls and talk to others on the phone. Usually we only used the phone to talk to him as a parent or he'd call his grandparents. He also was mindful and still is of some of the social rules of 'being a good host' and letting others choose games or movies when they come over.
PEERS® Social Skills Group for Adolescents
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The focus of the program is to provide motivated teens with ecologically valid social skills required to initiate and maintain friendships. Through role playing, homework components, and various activities, participants are encouraged to practice, enhance, and generalize their skills.
PROGRAM GOALS
Upon completion, participants will increase their knowledge and capacity to apply various social skills, will improve social responsiveness and increase the number and frequency of hosted “get-togethers”, as supported by the research.
PROGRAM DETAILS
-
Participation is required by both the teens and caregivers for the duration of the group sessions (12 weeks), each consisting of 90 minutes. Caregivers and teens attend separate sessions at different times, both currently held in an online format
-
Concurrent caregiver sessions are essential to ensure the longevity of the skills long after the program ends. Caregivers will become the social coaches to help to sustain the curriculum, expand social opportunities, encourage teen involvement in extra-curricular activities, and will assist with homework compliance.
-
Facilitators offer teens concrete steps through structured lessons that are practiced through modelling and role-playing, behavioural rehearsal and performance feedback.
-
Weekly homework assignments offer real-life practice and ensure generalization
